The Meal Planning and Preparation Training

Do you have clients who find it hard to cook at home, and end up making last-minute food decisions again and again, in a way that's clearly affecting their health?

Do you find yourself avoiding conversations about budget, lack of time, stress, or cooking for a family because you're not sure how to actually help a client move past those barriers?

Do you have clients whose health results would improve considerably if they could just plan and prepare their meals consistently, but you're not sure how to get them there?

If you answered yes to any of the above, you are not alone.

Most dietitians are trained in the what. Meaning what a client should be eating, the clinical recommendations, the evidence-based approach. What we're rarely trained in is the how. Meaning how to actually help a client execute meal planning and preparation, especially when real barriers get in the way and they are struggling to do so.

So we give a client some meal ideas, maybe a few tips, and hope they can follow it. When they don't or respond with "that's not going to work," it's easy to feel stuck, or to start treating the barrier as fixed, something about the client's life that's simply outside anyone's influence.

The problem isn't just the client's motivation. It's that meal planning and preparation is a series of behavioural and cognitive steps, which they often need counselling and coaching to execute. This is exactly why it's so hard for people to actually do and why telling someone what to plan and prepare to eat was never going to be enough on its own, without counselling and coaching them through the steps they need to be successful with building these skills and then practising them.

That's exactly what the Meal Planning and Preparation Training will help you fix.

Meal planning and prep is a skill your clients can build. Most just haven't been taught how.

A client can be handed the "right" meal plan and still not follow it, not because they don't want to, but because no one has helped them build the actual skills needed to execute the planning, preparation and cooking.

Meal planning and preparation touches nearly every barrier a client will bring to you — budget, time, motivation, family dynamics, boredom, all-or-nothing thinking. Clients don't just need to be told what to eat. They need help building the capacity to plan for it, prepare for it, and keep going when life gets in the way.

This training helps you guide that process, so your client isn't just handed a plan or list of recommendations. They're guided through building the actual skill and their capacity to implement it.

One of the biggest mistakes dietitians make...

Is treating a client's barriers to meal planning and prep as fixed. As if budget, time, or family dynamics simply can't be worked with.

Just because a barrier is real doesn't mean it can't be improved and managed. Effective counselling isn't about ignoring the barrier or working around it with a workaround meal plan. It's about knowing exactly how to work through it, with the client, so the plan that comes out the other side is one they can actually follow.

That's what turns a good recommendation into a plan that gets used.

I was only teaching. I wasn't coaching.

Early in my career, I'd sit with a client, give them a plan I knew was clinically right, and watch them nod along, only to see them back in my clinic weeks later having barely touched it.

I was only helping clients build knowledge, and that wasn't enough. Then, with reflection and supervision, I realised the problem wasn't the plan or the client. It was that I'd never actually taught them the counselling and coaching skills to get started with meal planning and preparation, and to be honest, I didn't know how to do this myself. But awareness of what needs to improve is always the starting point of doing something differently and more effectively.

Once I started using a step-by-step process that I developed from my counselling degree and all my experience counselling nutrition clients full time, I started seeing them progress, and within months, they were achieving meaningful improvements with their intake and clinical markers.

Today, this training is built on 16 years of clinical practice as an Accredited Practising Dietitian, my Master in Social Health and Counselling degree and my ongoing PhD research into the client experience with eating behaviour change and dietetic services, which has consistently shown that people need help building skills and capacity, not just knowledge.

The missing step between a meal plan and a client who actually plans, prepares and cooks it

Most dietitians know what to recommend from a nutrition perspective.

The difficult part is knowing:

  •         Where do I even start with this client?
  •         What's actually making this hard for them right now?
  •         How do I work through their specific barrier, instead of working around it?
  •         How do I help them build these skills?

That's the exact gap this training closes.

Here's what you'll receive

1. A 90-Minute Training

You'll learn:

  •         The purpose of meal planning and preparation, and why it's a series of behavioural and cognitive steps, not a single decision
  •         Common client challenges and common dietitian challenges when it comes to meal planning and prep
  •         Assessment requirements specific to meal planning and prep: how a client makes food decisions, how far ahead they plan, their budget, and what matters most to them
  •         Nutrition counselling strategies for how to start these conversations, and where to start with each client based on their preferences
  •         Specific strategies for each of the following barriers: budget constraints, time management, lack of cooking skills, family meals, cooking for one, someone else doing the cooking for them, need for variety and spontaneity, and all-or-nothing thinking

"Being able to explore what they really mean by variety is great. It helped me and the client think about this differently and work out how broad or narrow the plan needed to be. In the past, this was a barrier I never knew how to counsel someone through."

2. Food Preference Checklist

This isn't just a food list. It's a starting point built for each individual client.

Your client fills it in themselves or with you, ticking the foods they enjoy across each food category. Instead of starting from what's nutritionally ideal on paper, you start the plan from 3-4 foods they already like and build outward from there.

If a category comes back with little or nothing ticked, that's not something to just educate around. It's something worth exploring, whether that's a genuine dislike, unfamiliarity, or low confidence preparing those foods, so you know exactly where to go deeper in the conversation.

"The questions you provided in the training are helping me get the important details I need to guide clients through this process. Clients are responding well, and I feel more accomplished."

You'll also receive LIFETIME ACCESS to the training and resource, so you can revisit it whenever you need it.
